Tour of Mediterranean Stage 4 – 77km

This morning I woke up to snow falling outside my hotel window. It was coming down pretty heavy so most of us thought the stage would be cancelled.

However as we drove towards the start the weather was getting better so the stage was still to take place, however, with reduced length of 77km.

The stage started straight up a category two climb, so the pace was intense from the start. A group of about 50 got over the top, with myself included. I tried to go in as many moves as possible to try to make the days break, as I knew we were finishing up a climb so my chances for the stage were pretty limited.

One rider got away solo and Garmin controlled the pace for the leader of the tour, Michel Kreder. The breakaway rider was caught at the bottom of the climb and the eventual stage winner from Endura, attacked right at the base of the climb and rode away from a select group of riders.

So that was my first race of the season done! Next up I am off to Belgium for the opening weekend of the flemish classics, Omloop Het Niewsblad and Kuurne – Brussels – Kuurne in a couple of weeks time.

Should be fun if the weather improves!
